So, Alice in Borderland is my new fandom of 2023. So far, I've only written one fic for it, but I fully intend to write more in the future.

So, as you can probably tell from the title, the series is a play on Alice in Wonderland. It's a Japanese show and can be watched on Netflix either dubbed, or in Japanese with subtitles.

The basic premise of Alice in Borderland is that three friends find themselves abruptly in a Tokyo that's completely deserted. The buildings are all the same, but none of their friends or family are anywhere to be seen. After trying to find answers, the three - Arisu, Karube and Chota - find themselves in a game arena.

This world isn't an easy one. Those people who have found themselves in this deserted Tokyo have to play games in order to extend their visas and therefore stay in this new world. When a person's visa runs out, they die.

There are four different types of games and these correlate to the suits in a deck of cards. Clubs are games that require teamwork; spades are games of strength or endurance; diamonds are games of logic; and hearts play with people's emotions, with their hearts. Each game is given a card value that indicates the level of difficulty, as well as how long the visa is extended by. For instance, a three of clubs is a relatively easy teamwork game that will extend a visa by three days...as long as the player/s clear or 'win' the game. Losing results in death. Trying to leave the game arena before the game is over results in death.

A good fandom always has good characters and I have two main favourite characters. This is the first one:

Chishiya is one of those dark, mysterious, interesting characters who has a hidden agenda. And, yes, he uses and manipulates people...but he's smart and engaging and very charming even so. He was immediately interesting in his first appearance, although I did think that he'd turn out to be an outright evil character! Actually, many of the characters in Alice in Borderland have a lot of depth to them. But in comparison to many of the others, Chishiya's history isn't shown until well into season two, leaving him an enigma for most of the series.

Kuina is truly amazing. On first appearance, she seems to be a pretty young woman who's just there to have a good time/have fun. However, in season one, she has a truly epic moment...and it's also revealed that she's transgender, which adds a lot more depth to her character and her journey in the series. She is a really awesome person with so much depth to her...and unlike Chishiya, who she's initially seen with and is friends with, she's very clearly a good person.

There are a lot of other characters in this series, but these two are the main ones who I like. Towards the end of season two, I actually teared up when it came to a particular scene with Kuina. Without going into too much detail, she was someone I feel like I connected to on a truly deep level. I honestly think I'd want to be friends with her if we ever met in real life.
